King of the beasts (5 of 9)

Fifth design small in size, but regal: the king of beasts, a gorgeous full-maned lion (designed freehand on my StitchPainter program for the "composite" image, and inspired by the Victorian needlepoint book; see bibliography and link list).

In these designs for the “composite” image, the point was not to design my own images, but to reproduce, as accurately as possible, the Victorian images, as presented by Ms. Bradley. For example, the muzzle of my own version of a lion would have been quite different, but a great part of the fun for this project was getting an authentically Victorian feel, thanks to the help of Ms. Bradley's marvelous book.
